A Canadian citizen enjoys more rights and privileges than a permanent resident or any category of temporary resident. If you meet the eligibility criteria, it takes you around 12 months to become a Canadian citizen after you apply.

Eligibility

There are certain conditions that you need to meet before you can apply for Canadian citizenship. You must:

  • Be a permanent resident.
  • Have filed your taxes if required.
  • Prove your language proficiency.
  • Have lived in Canada for 3 out of the preceding 5 years (must be physically present in Canada for a minimum of 1095 days out of 1826 days from the date you sign your citizenship application).
  • Not be inadmissible or under trial inside or outside Canada.
  • Pass a citizenship test.

There are additional or different requirements if:

  • You are a Canadian applying for your adopted child born outside Canada.
  • You are a present or former CAF member applying under the fast-track process.
  • You are applying for a minor.
  • You are a former Canadian citizen who wants to resume your citizenship.

  • Freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression including freedom of speech and of the press.
  • Freedom of peaceful assembly.
